The First Time, Indonesian Scientists Mapped Corona SARS Genome-CoV-2

For the first time, scientists at the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology succeeded in mapping the sequence of RNA nucleic acids making up the corona virus genome, SARS-CoV-2 from Indonesia.

“There are 3 whole genome sequences (WGS), maybe in Indonesia also the first time,”. Director of the Eijkman Molecular Biology Institute Professor Amin Soebandrio told Kompas.com, Monday (05/04/2020). Prof. Amin said the three genomes came from virus samples belonging to three patients.

The sample was selected based on the high viral load obtained from the PCR test results.

“The high patient viral load makes it easy for us to do this sequencing.

“Sequencing is done directly from the patient sample without the need for culture, it can be done if the viral load is high,” . Explained Prof. Amin.

Deputy Head of LBM Eijkman Institute’s Fundamental Research Herawati Sudoyo added that the mapping of the corona virus. RNA sequence used the Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) tool.

Eijkman’s team of scientists conducted a genome mapping of three virus isolates. From three patients who were confirmed positive for Covid-19 in Indonesia.

“This is the first complete corona virus sequence data from Indonesia and has been uploaded to the GISAID data center,” Prof. Hera said in Whatsapp’s short message to Kompas.com.

Data that has been uploaded in the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID) later, said Prof.

Hera will support the rapid process of sharing more than 16,000 corona virus data worldwide.
