Enforcement of the Global Protocol on New Normal World Tourism

Tourism has become the most affected sector due to the recent corona virus outbreak. In this regard, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) as a global tourism institution is developing a new protocol in the world of tourism.

WTTC President and CEO Gloria Guevara said the development of the global protocol would be divided into four main pillars. The drafting also takes into account World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“The four pillars are that they must pay attention to operational and staff readiness, ensure a safe experience. Rebuild tourist confidence, and confidence and the application of possible policies,” Gloria said in a joint teleconference with the Indonesia Tourism Forum (ITF), Friday (05/15/2020).

He continued, the aim of making this global protocol was to rebuild trust among consumers or tourists. So they could travel safely when restrictions were lifted. This new protocol will provide a global consistency of destinations and countries as well as guidance for travel providers, operators and tourists. Regarding new approaches to health and hygiene in the post-Covid-19 world.

Gloria said, the health and safety of tourists and workers will be placed at the heart of the new global protocol. Which has been compiled by WTTC members. To realize that this global protocol can work well after the pandemic, Gloria said. There needs to be collaboration between the government and the private sector.

“Coordination and alignment in the travel and tourism sector is very important to ensure that strong global steps. The implemented to rebuild trust can be shared by the government and the private sector,” he said.

“We are pleased, for the first time. The global private sector has harmonized around this new protocol that will create consistency across sectors,” he said.

“Now we call on governments to adopt it. So that they can be implemented globally and restore the trust that is urgently needed to restart the sector, “he added.

The WTTC also reports on the importance of public and private collaboration to ensure that smart policies and active communities make it possible for the travel and tourism sector to revive.

In compiling this global protocol, Gloria said it had collaborated and consulted effectively with its members. As well as industry associations such as Airports Council International (ACI), Cruise International Lines Association (CLIA), and International Air Transport Association (IATA).

This global protocol will apply in all major industries in travel and tourism including hospitality, aviation, airports, cruise ship operators, retail, transportation, MICE and tour operators.

Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Wishnutama Kusubandio who also attended the event also said the industry needs to implement health protocols to face the New Normal era.

“The health protocol to safety will come to tourists’ attention. We continue to work hard to formulate strategic steps in preparing health protocols in order to accelerate the recovery of the tourism sector.”

He also expressed optimism that Indonesia’s tourism sector could recover faster than previously predicted. He believes Indonesia can do better than the predicted five years of tourism recovery, revealed by several studies.

Nevertheless, this can happen if accompanied by cooperation from all sectors and stakeholders, he said. “We have to normalize our tourism sector faster. We must fully realize that tourism is the backbone of the economy, “he said.
