The wave will occur if a magnitude 9 earthquake occurs in a sea trench located on the Pacific coast of the State of “Sakura”.
The warning came from a panel of scientists using the worst case scenario, where the mega earthquake in the Japanese Trench and Kuril Trench in the north will happen “anytime”.
They say that large tsunamis in the region occur every 300 to 400 years, with the most recent being recorded in the 17th century.
The Japanese moat stretches from waters off the coast of Hokkaido to the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo. Quoted from the Japan Times on Tuesday (4/21/2020).
The government panel is having trouble calculating when the big earthquake will occur. All that can be seen is the historical fact that large tsunamis occur in the north every 300 to 400 years.
The panel conducted a simulation
The panel conducted a simulation based on an analysis of tsunami deposits in the past 6,000 years.
That struck seven prefectures, namely Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraka, and Chiba.
Miyako in Iwate Prefecture is predicted to be hit by a tsunami of up to 29.7 meters. While the city of Erimo in Hokkaido is affected by 27.9 meters.
Seismologist from the University of Tokyo, Kenji Satake, said the earthquake and tsunami have occurred several times in the past 6,000 years in the area.
He focused on evacuation policies, not infrastructure.
